Sholinganallur is often celebrated as one of Tamil Nadu’s fastest growing and most economically significant constituencies. Over the past decade, it has evolved into a major urban and commercial hub, anchored by iconic IT parks, global technology companies, and a dense cluster of high-rise residential apartments. The Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) corridor, with Sholinganallur at its heart, has become a key driver of employment, investment, and government revenue.

Yet, beneath this success story lies an uncomfortable truth: Sholinganallur’s basic infrastructure has failed to keep pace with its rapid growth.

Despite contributing substantially to the state’s economy through property taxes, stamp duty, commercial activity, and indirect taxes, residents continue to grapple daily with poor roads, unreliable water supply, inadequate drainage, and unsafe pedestrian conditions. The gap between economic contribution and civic attention is growing wider and harder to ignore.

 

Growth Without Planning 

Urban growth, when unmanaged, often brings unintended consequences. In Sholinganallur, development has been swift but largely uncoordinated. Residential towers and commercial establishments have mushroomed, but corresponding investments in roads, water systems, stormwater drainage, and public safety infrastructure have lagged far behind.

The result is visible across the constituency: roads that are repeatedly dug up and poorly restored, traffic bottlenecks that worsen every year, and interior streets that are unsafe even for routine commuting. What should have been planned as a modern urban zone instead reflects reactive governance.

 

Roads That Endanger Lives

One of the most pressing concerns is road safety. Several roads in and around Sholinganallur are unfit for pedestrians and two wheelers. Footpaths, where they exist, are broken, encroached upon, or unusable. Pedestrians are forced to walk on carriageways alongside fast moving traffic, putting children, senior citizens, and office goers at constant risk.

For a constituency dominated by working professionals and daily commuters, this lack of basic pedestrian infrastructure is not just an inconvenience - it is a serious safety failure.

 

Water and Drainage: A Recurring Crisis

Access to reliable drinking water remains another unresolved issue. Many residential communities continue to depend heavily on private water tankers, increasing costs and raising concerns about quality and sustainability.

Even more alarming is the state of stormwater drainage. Every monsoon exposes the same weaknesses: water stagnation, flooded roads, and water entering homes. Flooding has become a predictable annual event rather than an exception, caused by incomplete drainage networks, encroached water bodies, and lack of maintenance.

Each year, residents brace themselves for disruption, property damage, and health risks while long term flood mitigation remains largely absent.

 

Revenue Without Reinvestment?

The OMR–Sholinganallur stretch has undeniably been a revenue engine for the state over the last decade. This makes the lack of proportionate reinvestment in local infrastructure difficult to justify.

Basic amenities such as safe roads, effective drainage, and dependable water supply are not luxuries. They are fundamental obligations of urban governance.

When economic hubs are neglected, the consequences extend beyond local inconvenience. Productivity suffers, quality of life declines, and the long-term sustainability of growth itself comes into question.

 

The Need for Vision and Accountability

What Sholinganallur needs is not piecemeal fixes, but a comprehensive and forward-looking infrastructure plan one that integrates road development, water supply, sewage, stormwater drainage, and pedestrian safety into a single, coordinated framework.

Equally important is accountability in execution. Infrastructure must be designed for durability, implemented transparently, and maintained consistently. Temporary solutions and reactive measures will only prolong the problem.


A Call for Civic Priority

Sholinganallur represents the promise of modern Tamil Nadu aspirational, productive, and globally connected. But that promise rings hollow when residents struggle for basic civic facilities.

A constituency that fuels economic growth deserves infrastructure that reflects its importance. Safe roads, reliable water, and effective drainage are not unreasonable demands; they are essential to dignified urban living.

If Sholinganallur is to remain a symbol of progress, its infrastructure story must finally match its economic success.
